WOODLOT for Windows 2.1 - Reference Manual

12.7 Calculate
To calculate your woodlot harvest rate, use this feature. You have the option of:
  • Selecting which ownership you wish to calculate a harvest rate for
  • Disabling all partial cuts for a comparison with clearcutting. (Commercial thinning is not available at this time, and is grayed out.)
  • Delaying the start of a harvest for a period of time
  • Running calculation simulations automatically, or forcing a cut manually

12.7.1 Harvest Crown, Private, Top-up, Other
Select the ownership polygons you wish to calculate a harvest rate for by checking the boxes.

Note that a combined ownership harvest rate will be different than separate ownership's added together. Scheduling will be easier and overall harvest rates will generally be higher for a larger number of polygons.

12.7.2 Disable Partial Cut
Select this check box if you want to run a calculation assuming that all polygons will be clearcut. All polygons will be harvested at the harvest age selected in Polygon Data, and regenerated using VDYP yields.

12.7.3 Auto - Delay Harvest for
Leave this box checked if you wish to use the automatic delay period. In the checked position, WOODLOT will use no delay (i.e. 0 years)

To delay a harvest calculation, clear the checkbox and enter the number of years you wish to delay the start of a calculation for. This may be useful if your woodlot is predominantly under the normal harvest ages selected in Polygon Data.

WOODLOT will use a default of no delay unless you manually change this.

12.7.4 Auto-Harvest Rate
A harvest rate may be calculated in three ways:
  1. Using the automatic feature. Leave the automatic setting checked on and click the Run Simulation button.
  2. Using the Rate command in the upper File menu
  3. Clicking off the automatic feature, and using a manually entered harvest rate to force a cut.
Once you select the method for calculations, click the Run Simulation button.

12.7.5 Run Simulation Button
Click the run simulation button to start a simulation. Alternately, you may use the Rate feature in the man menu.

Once the Run Simulation button has been clicked, the harvest calculation simulation starts. A series of screens will appear showing the calculation iterations used.

Information will be filled into the following screens after you run a calculation:
  • Harvest Schedule
  • Harvest Parameters NOT met, if any
  • The Hanzlik calculation and number of polygons harvested
  • Standing Volume/Time graph.
If you forced a cut, you will also see vertical lines in the Standing Volume/Time graph, as follows:
  • White lines or spaces indicate periods when no timber was available for harvest, and harvesting was deferred
  • Red lines where the height constraint was not met
  • Yellow lines where the age constraint was not met
  • In many instances, the Red will also be draped over the yellow, though only the red will be displayed.
