WOODLOT for Windows 2.1 - Reference Manual

9.9 Managed - TIPSY Specific Data WOODLOT uses the Ministry of Forests Table Interpolation Program for Stand Yields (TIPSY batch version) to derive yields on managed stands. Please refer to a TIPSY user manual to answer any specific questions you have on TIPSY data or results. Enter inventory data for stands that have or will receive some level of planting or management to bring to a free growing state, or significant intervention in the way of spacing. If you do not know, assume the stand to be naturally occurring, and use VDYP for both existing and future. Enter polygon information here as follows.
9.9.1 Density (Stems/ha) Enter the number of stems per hectare at date of establishment. For older stands, you will have to check inventory information or make an assumption. Minimum density is 331 s/ha, maximum is 10 000 for natural and 4444 for planted. 9.9.2 Thin (Stems/ha) You can activate the thinning feature by clicking on this check box if the stand will be thinned. A white text box will be displayed if this feature is activated. Do not use this feature unless you are sure the stand will be thinned. Minimum density allowed is 331 s/ha. 9.9.3 SI (bh) Age Use this feature only if you wish to calculate site index with TIPSY. TIPSY will calculate a Site Index for stands that are older than 30 years. Enter the breast height age used to derive SI for the polygon. This is not the total age as is used in VDYP. 9.9.4 Regeneration - Natural/Planted Stand Select either Planted or Natural for establishment by using the down arrow. 9.9.5 OAF1 / OAF2 Operational Adjustment Factors (OAF) can be selected from the Settings screen. They have been set to the recommended defaults of 15 and 5%, and should not be adjusted unless you have better information. Refer to the TIPSY manual if you have any questions on the use or application of OAFS. OAF1 and OAF2 are used to account for unproductive areas (holes in the forest) and losses towards maturity (pests) found operationally in new forests, but that have not been accounted for in managed stand research information. 9.9.6 Species Enter species by either typing in a species code or by using the down arrow buttons to select a species. Enter in the percent by species from 1 to 100. A selection must be made from the 6 different species permitted under TIPSY. TIPSY will accept up to 5 species (not 6 as in VDYP) for a single polygon.
The species selection is based on six species supported by TIPSY. Species listed with an asterisk (*) will use surrogate species from one of the six species in TIPSY to derive yield information. Refer to the WinTIPSY user manual for a listing of surrogate species if yours are not shown in this list, or "Appendix 7 - Species" 9.9.7 Species Percent Acceptable Values: Positive integer Enter the percent by species to a total of 100%. The boxes will be a yellow colour if not all species add up to 100%. Double click on the percent box to automatically allocate the remaining percent to this species, or enter in the correct number. 9.9.8 Site Index Acceptable Values: Positive decimal Enter a known site index (meters at reference age 50 years) in the text box, which is available from forest cover maps, and inventory FIP files or silviculture records. Alternately, you may have the SI derived by TIPSY by entering height and age in the next few fields. Site index MUST be entered for stands younger than 30 years, and cannot be calculated. The site index will change to a cyan (light blue) colour if the calculated site index is different from the one entered. The rule in TIPSY is, unlike VDYP, a manually entered SI will override a SI calculated from age and height. The SI entered or calculated will be used for all TIPSY species in that polygon. 9.9.9 Site Index Height Enter height derived for the breast height stand age of the dominant trees.
