WOODLOT for Windows 2.1 - Reference Manual

2.3 Installation

A TEMP directory on your C drive may be required for installation. If a TEMP directory is specified in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, it must exist or setup will fail. TEMP can be typed at the DOS prompt to find the location of temporary files. Then check to make sure that this directory exists. Alternately, use Windows Explorer to check that you have a TEMP directory on your C drive, or to create one.

WOODLOT is available in various formats: diskette or as a single executable file which may be downloaded from the ENFOR website (www.enfor.com). Ministry of Forests staff should contact their systems administrator for availability from Resource Tenures and Engineering Branch. Both installations use the same basic procedure. Depending on you operating system, you will start this procedure differently, as described below.

2.3.3 World Wide Web (Web) Installation Windows 95/98/NT
Presently, a website installation is available from www.enfor.com. You may download the complete version of WOODLOT or upgrades from this website. To use the website method, you will have to first set up a temporary directory to "download" the program, decompress the program files you have downloaded, and then install the program onto your computer. Please refer to this website periodically to check for upgrades.

The procedure is:
  1. Using Windows Explorer, create a new empty "folder" on your "Desktop", called "WOODLOT Install"
  2. Using your Internet browser, connect to www.enfor.com or other websites offering this service. Download the program and save it to the newly created folder.
  3. When downloading is complete, double click on the program. This will decompress all files needed for installation.
  4. When decompression is complete; double click on the program icon called 'setup.exe'
Proceed to step five in Section "2.3.5 Installation-all operating systems". page 2-6

2.3.4 Web Installation Windows 3.1x
  1. In File Manager Create an empty sub directory called "WLINST"
  2. Using your Internet browser, connect to www.enfor.com or other websites offering this service. Download the program and save it to the newly created folder.
  3. When downloading is complete, double click on the program. This will decompress all files needed for installation.
  4. When decompression is complete; double click on the file named 'setup.exe'
Proceed to step five in Section "2.3.5 Installation-all operating systems". page 2-6

2.3.5 Installation-all operating systems.
  1. A message box may appear to warn you that some files already on your computer may need to be overwritten. Close these files so as not to cause a "sharing violation" problem, and then continue with overwriting. The installation program will check versions of libraries and system files before overwriting.

It is a good idea when installing any software package to close all other applications. 'MS Office Shortcut Bar' and other similar programs share system files with WOODLOT and other Windows programs. These programs must be closed during the installation of WOODLOT.
  2. A screen will then be displayed asking for the location where WOODLOT should be installed. The directory where WOODLOT is to be installed will be shown on a lower box. Most users will not need to change this directory. Press on the large button on the middle left side to install WOODLOT.
  3. Follow the on screen instruction. If you are installing from diskettes, you will be prompted to insert each disk.
  4. An Icon will be created for the WOODLOT program. The icon will be in a different location depending on which operating system you are using.

Windows 95 / 98 The icon will be in the 'Start Menu' under "programs". You may want to drag this onto your desktop, or alternately create a shortcut from within the WOODLOT directory.
Windows NT 4.0 the icon will appear in the 'User's Programs' section of the 'start menu'. To allow other users to access to this program, the shortcut must be moved or copied to a public folder. Only an installer with administrative privileges on the workstation will be able to run setup. An icon will be created in the profile of the installer's login ID.
Windows NT 3.51 A common program group called WOODLOT will be created with an icon for WOODLOT.EXE. A common program group is available to everyone who logs on whereas a personal program group is user specific.
Windows 3.1x A program group called WOODLOT will be created with an icon for WOODLOT.EXE
