WOODLOT for Windows 2.1 - Reference Manual

1.1 Background

WOODLOT was developed for the Ministry of Forests, Resource Tenures and Engineering Branch for calculating non-declining, even flow harvest rates on woodlot licenses in B.C. It is a windows based model developed for use by operational forestry professionals and technicians specializing in woodlot licence management. Some highlights of WOODLOT are:

  • user friendly windows based features and interface
  • allows for loading data manually or from spreadsheets
  • help information at the bottom of the polygon entry screen
  • approximates forest cover harvest constraints and some economic harvest parameters
  • approximates partial cutting
  • interactive harvest calculations
  • variety of data summaries
  • on screen graphics of yield curves, standing volume over time and age class distribution
  • produces professional quality reports
This is a substantially upgraded version of the original model (version 1.0) produced in June 1996. Version 2.1 retains all the features of version 1.0, and adds numerous enhancements and upgrades in response to user feedback in 1997.

The original WOODLOT version 1.0 was developed in response to results from a user survey conducted by the Ministry of Forests in 1995. The original objective was to develop a model to be a user friendly, easy to understand windows based model which would combine a simple harvest rate calculation technique with the latest versions of yield models. WOODLOT was designed to produce basic harvest rate calculations using forest cover and resource management information readily available to forest district staff. A few concepts used in a previous model (WoodStock) have been retained in WOODLOT.

An important feature of WOODLOT is that summary data and calculations are displayed. This was an attempt to make the data requirements and calculations transparent, and thereby easily understood. Graphical displays make the application relatively easy to use, to assist the user with decisions for calculating harvest rates, to view implications of alternate harvest rates, constraints and alternate management practices. All polygon data and most parameters are adjustable on screen.

(Note that this user guide was developed using Windows 95. Some icons, buttons, and message windows may not appear exactly the same in Windows 3.1).
